The Greens travelled to Bridgehaugh on Saturday for their opening BT Premiership game and lost out 28 19 to Stirling County who have attracted 12 new players this season.
Hawick opened the scoring with an excellent try from full back Kirk Ford after Ryan Hogg had won a quick line out, Ford also converted to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. The home side replied quickly with a try and penalty goal.
After quarter of an hour, the home side were pressing hard for another try when the Greens Scotland Under 20 winger, Darcy Graham, scored an excellent try from an interception that Ford again converted. The Greens extended their lead to 19 8 with another well taken try from Garry Johnstone after good work by the back division.
Before the interval , Stirling County fought back with a penalty and another converted try helped with some poor defence from the Greens.
The second half saw Stirling more dominant with their big pack winning more ball than the first half and they scored a penalty and another converted try for a 28 19 win.
League debutants for the Greens were Kyle Brunton, Callum Mackintosh, Dalton Redpath, Andrew Horne and South African recruit Wesley Hamilton.
Hawick coaches will be pleased with aspects of the first half performance but know there is a lot of work to do in what is going to be a very competitive league campaign.
