Hawick RFC had much to celebrate at the weekend because not only did the Greens and the Force both win but the Club won the right to have their name engraved on the Bill McLaren Shield. The SRU introduced this impressive trophy in honour of the town’s own late great Voice of Rugby in 2011 and it was first competed for at Mansfield Park on 3 September 2011 in a game against Boroughmuir. Sadly, Hawick lost that day and have had to wait a very long time to get it back. A team has to win four successive competitive games at home and we have done this by winning against Edinburgh Accies on 18 January 2020 33-0, on 29 February 2020 against Aberdeen GSFP 54-7, against Currie on 3 September 25-20 and Selkirk on 18 September 2021 23-22. Because of the Covid pandemic the Club will probably go down in history as having held the Shield for the longest time. The rules now state that Hawick have to take the trophy on the road and keep it until they lose a game home or away. All at Mansfield are hoping that Hawick can keep it in their possession for many weeks to come.
