Prior to the first league match of this season against Currie Chieftains, Hawick RFC club President Neil Hamilton and Captain Matt Carryer, on behalf of the club, were the proud recipients of a very special donation from the family of 60’s Greens legend, the late Billy Hunter. Following the Scotland vs New Zealand 1964 international, played at Murrayfield, Billy was presented with the match ball, which had been signed by both squads, in recognition of his participation and performance in the game. Together with his great pal and Greens teammate Oliver Grant, Billy was part of the team which held Wilson Whineray’s mighty All Blacks to a 0-0 draw, thus depriving the All Blacks of a tour Grand Slam against the home nations.
Billy’s sons, Stuart, Derek, and Alan seen here together with club captain Matt Carryer, President Neil Hamilton and Vice President Ian Landles, kindly donated the ball to the club, on behalf of their family, together with a beautiful hand crafted plinth made by the late great Jock Beattie, on which the ball will be displayed in the club.
