This was a ‘proper’ rugby game, worthy of any loftier encounter on any pitch. The fact that this was a Border derby gave added spice to the encounter, and both subs benches were emptied early as the rough and tumble caused lots of sore limbs, but it was the fierce Force who fought it out the stronger to win.
Bolstered by some first team players, this was still a Force side full of youthful exuberance, and it was youngster Charlie Comley who burrowed over early to give the home side a deserved lead. 3 stone wet through he is a slippery customer (just like the wonderful Bill McLaren quote now immortalised near the Station Brig).
However, the visitors did not come just to stand and admire and forceful play by (son of a Teri) Campbell Scott saw them forge into a lead when Hawick seemed to become reactive rather than proactive.
A half time rocket (that would have made Neil Armstrong proud) from coach Landels, ensured much more commitment from his lads. Son in law Bailey Donaldson kicked accurately for ‘the fither’ and Finn Douglas scampered in for a try that was reminiscent of grandfather Rob in his pomp.
The Force pack were ascendant with club captain Matty Carryer charging relentlessly like a wounded wilder beast but even more impressive was Liam Graham who charged like a wounded even wilder beast. This led to a front row drive over try that made the score more comfortable, but still nervy.
James Delaney and Justin Tait ran and tackled well, whilst a breakaway try from Hawick’s own JJ Williams lookalike in Dafydd Powell meant that a victory was assured. Icing on the cake came from Shovie junior, which was ironic as he only came to trim his father’s tache but was persuaded to play and scored with his first touch. Shovie senior has the touch in persuading senior lads to play and perhaps Toonie should add him to the HQ backroom staff.
The visitors scored late on but this was a deserved 5 pointer for the Force, where Tom Huggan again put in a man of the match performance, which he will no doubt toast with a liberal serving of tonic wine.
